Okay - new person's confusion with too much info has thoroughly set in. Tongue

What are the #2, #3, #4 wicks?
Are these the same as, for instance, 2/0 ?

No, the 2/0 is smaller than #2. Go to any candle site and look at the wicks under braided and you will see the different sizes. HTH

I have a 26oz elevation jar from walmart I am getting ready to try.  Does anyone have a suggestion on the wick size & also should I double or single wick?  As for the question about the HTP 104 I use them in some of my 8oz jars it really depends on the fo though.  Some of my fo do soot really bad with this size but others do great amount some you can burn for only 2 hours before sooting others you can burn for 3 to 3 1/2 hours and get nothing...in the ones I can't use them in I use 51z (like fudge brownie, ginger peach so far I think those are the only 2).  My 16oz wide mouth mason jars I use HTP 105.  In all these my wax I use is J300.  HTH someone out there!

I only pour the 26 oz. apothecary jars and use 6006 wax.  I've tested several wicks in this jar and the best burn pool comes from a 60-44-18Z wick for me anyway.  I've used that for several fragrances and the results seems to be the same in each jar.  I do have to burn it for a longer time for the first burn, like ALL day (8 hours or more) but it leaves very little hangup on the sides, and what is hung-up there seems to just slide down the jar.  So far no customer complaints... they just love the scents (Peaks of course!) and no one cares about a small mushroom or a little hangup on the jar.

For your 26 Elevation....you use only 1, 60z?  I have 2 of those jars and i do have the 60z...but i use the J300....do you think 1, 60z would work or should i try 2 of something lower?

I think on my 26oz Elevation jar I am going to try 2 of the 51z (cause I have those on hand) then if they don't work maybe try the HTP 105 or the 61z!

Help!!! I thought I would try and make some pillar candles. My Mother-In-law bought me Pillar Wax 4625 from Peaks and several fragrances.  I am totally confused on what kind of wick I need to use.  My molds are from Michaels (a craft store).  Can anyone help me please!!

Melissa

PS  My MIL put a request in for a candle like she saw at Peaks that looks like it has glass in it - any ideas on how to make it?

Hey there Melissa. What size is the mold you are going to be using? If your mold is 3x?? you can start with a 24 flat ply and then try a 30 flat ply. I use both of these. If your mold is 2x?? then you could start with an 18 flat ply and then try a 21 flat ply. If I knew which candle picture you are talking about maybe I could help you on the type of candle it is. HTH

24 oz balmoral (Walmart) filled to 20 oz with J223 - 22CD
Keepsake (Walmart) new wax from C&S - 22CD
62C worked almost as well bit of a hangup half way down container, but I believe it will catch up.  I'll probably stick with the CD.
Just made the balmoral with the new wax (22CD); I'll post after burning.

Just found this thread and read all three pages...  I had a few "comments" and thought I'd share with you.

Someone mentioned having a "reliable guide" to follow when it comes to wicking.  This would be really wonderful; however, I've done this long enough to realize that what may "work" terrific for several of you does NOT always work for me and visa versa...  There is not explanation for that, but it does happen!

So - especially for some of you Newbies - please understand the only way you're going to know if something "works" is to TEST it for yourself!  Some of you want to be out there selling, but you need to be 100% sure of YOUR candles...

I almost always use 1oz FO to 16oz of wax!  (As it happens, I'm close enough to Candles & Supplys AND Candlewic to PICK UP my wax AND have latched on to Eco Soya 135 for containers and PB for votives.)  I "season" my jars for two weeks (sometimes more) and, normally, have a great scent throw!  For the most part I use RRD wicks...

A few of you had questions about zinc wicks...  I tried them but didn't care for them myself.  I understand that if you mail candles that contain zinc wicks you have to include some kind of disclaimer on the outside of your shipping carton..Huh

...Anyway PAPER cored wicks burn a little hotter than your zinc.  I've never had any that have fallen over into my wax either -- they stay straight as the zinc!  I, personally like these pretty much.  They're fantastic in the wider containers!  (I really think they'd be worth your trying in those containers that are not quite burning to the edge!!!)

60-44-18 for 4-5" containers AND 62-52-18 for 4.5" to 5.5"

I've gotta say, needing to burn a candle for 8 hrs to get a full melt pool is NOT a feasible thing...  TRY PAPER WICKS or use TWO wicks (<<some customers like the two!)...

HTH answer some questions.

Hello, I am brand new at posting, although I have been
a big fan of the message board for some time now.
I am a beginning candle maker, and have a question about wicking. I have searched for some answers, and intend to search some more, but what i need to know is what is LX,CD
and RRD. Sorry if this is a silly question, it will help me when i search for answers.
thanks
