Thanks to Groovy mamma's help I'm just trying out the cd4 and cd5 in my 2oz votives.  CD5 seems to be the winner.

Here's my info!

1343 with stearic or vybar
3in - 24 ply flat
4in - not sure, but 36 does NOT work!

Thought I would throw in these novelty molds too:
Crescent Moon (larger style) 18 ply
Star with 3 or maybe 3 1/4 in inside diameter: 18 ply
5 petal flower (about 3 in diameter) 18 ply

Also have a small star with a 2 1/2 in diamater and will try the 15 ply when I get it.  18 is still too big.

Thanks for all the info i am still new to this. I am using quilted 8oz. jelly jars and i have wick 44-24-18z and the melt pool is not good. I double up on the wicks and now it is good, but was wondering what wick size to order next time (now i know i see some of you use 44-32-18z). Thanks ya all. One more thing i use 6006 wax and was wondering what is the difference in J223 wax? Does it have a better scent throw (hot)?  Thanks again

Wynema - I test burnt 4- 8 oz quilted jelly jars for the last couple of days using 6006 wax and French Vanilla scent. at  .75 oz/lb scent  (which should be a heavier scent being vanilla I think) - I used CD8, 44-24-18Z, 51-32-18, and htp-41. The htp-41 didn't give a good melt pool, so replaced with the htp-52.  What I found that both the CD8 and 44-24-18Z worked the best. They were comparable. I was surprised that the bigger wick - the 51-32-18 didn't work as well, but would have been okay. (It eventually caught up) The htp-52 worked the least well as far as melt pool-but had the least mushrooming. I had a little mushrooming on the other 3. But I would be happy with either the CD8 or 44-24-18Z. After 3 - 3-4 hour burn sessions here are is a picture, left to right 44,cd8,51,htp52. HTH
(modified to take out vybar - duh didn't add any)

this wick business is tough. I have only used flat wick for glass moulded tapers. The wick I have been using for pillars does not even sound like anything I've seen talked about here. The numbers on my wick is 0/1 I seem to have reasonable results in 3.5"to 4" diameters...he other sizes are 3 and 24. All braided. Should I be using more flat wicks? I use parrafin & a combination of beeswax..very little beeswax maybe 20 to 1.

Wynema,
For the 8 oz jelly jars with 6006, I've used the HTP-73 and they worked pretty well. I also wanted to try the 83's but just haven't gotten around to it.

Sher and Jessie, Thanks for the info. Now to sound dumb, what kind of wick is the HTP? I take it that its not a zinc wick? Where are you guys ordering them from? I have only ordered from lonestar so far, i will check and see if they have them next time i go to that site.
Sher, another silly question, what is vybar? I am new to this and self teaching. I just got froggy one day and jumped into something i had no clue how to do. I'm loving it though... Thanks a bunch this site has been a life or should i say candle saver for me. Grin

I have been using 51-32-18 zinc in my 8oz wide mouth jelly jars. I get a good burn great scent throw. But the mushrooming is driving me bonkers. I was thinking of changing to 51-32-18p. Is this comparable to the zinc. I don't want my wicks falling over in the burning stage. Which is another reason I use the zinc.
also I have been testing the 8oz elevation jars and boy do I suck. The hang up on the sides are about 1/4 thick. I have burned it till nothing left of the wick. never got a full melt pool. I used 51-32-18z Any suggestions? PLEASE.

This is a great topic!  Since I have easier access for shipping from Candlewic and Candles & Supplies, I use different waxes than a lot of you.  Here are my test results for starting points.

Candlewic 4045H mottling wax
        1" pillar - 2/0 round
        2" pillar - HTP 72
        3" pillar - 1/0 round

IGI 1218 Translucent wax
        2" pillar - RRD 37
        3" pillar - LX 18 or LX 20

We have some widemouth canning jars that we're having trouble with.  They are an 8oz and a 16oz.  Both 3" wide and of course the 16oz is twice as tall.  We've tried both 44z and 51z sizes and even the 51z leaves some on the side.  Is this normal?  Most websites claim that the 51z is good up to 4" dia.  Seems like the 44z should even work.  THanks

Question for those who use the htp 104 in the jelly jars...  Especially the 8 oz ones.  I for the life of me don't get it?!  When i used those in the ball pint widemouth jars, or anything that wasn't at least 5 inches across, I got horrible horrible soot.  I tested my heart out, and couldn't get them to work in any size jelly jar.  Bad batch of wicks maybe?  I'm lost!

Hello my name is Cindy me and my best friend are stay at home moms, and thought this would be something fun to do and make some extra cash. We have ordered from Bitercreek and Lonestar. We use the 8oz.jelly jars. With J-50 wax . We have used 51-32-18z wicks, and the LX18 wicks. We use 1 pound of wax and 1 1/2 oz. of fragrance. We heat the wax to 175. then let it cool to 160 and add the fragrance and dye then pour. But all the candles we've made barely have a flame and a small melt pool that just burns down the middle. We were using crayola crayons for coloring , but we stoped using them becasue we heard that crayons can clog the wick , so now we use liquid dye. Could somebody please help us and let us know what can we be doing wrong ! Thanks and look foward to hearing from you !

Hi Cindy,

How long are you burning your candles for at a time? It could be you aren't burning long enough for each burn. HTH
