1st show last weekend...Soy Candle???
« on: Jul 6th, 2005, 8:59pm »

So, I have been so immersed in the making of my soy candles and am so familiar with the concept, that I found it surprising this weekend that a lot of people were confused, had never heard of them and even doubted the possibility.  I got Q's like:
Where's the soy?
Does it burn like a real candle?
How do they turn the bean into a wax?
Is it like beeswax?
Is this for real?

1 guy said "Fractionated Oils aren't good for you" I said, well you're not ingesting it. Have any of you run into this? What's your pitch, if you don't mind sharing?

OMG...LOL.  "Fractionated oils aren't good for you."  Did he think he was supposed to eat your candle.  Good grief.  The gal my sister works for kept dipping her hands in the candle I made and sent down to her.  My sister finally asked her what she was doing and she said well soy is good for the hands.  My sister said, "you are such a dink, that is a paraffin candle not a soy"..LOL.  So she had to call me to make sure and we all had a good laugh.

I did a FAQ paper and handed it out to those asking qustions. I answered the questions too but many just grabbed the info and scent list and kept on walking. They came back later to resmell the candles and buy.

My number one question at shows  is "ARE THESE SOY".  I swear sometimes I would like to hang a big banner that says "I'M NOT SOY"   Don't take me wrong I have nothing against soy candles, I just started making candles before the soy thing came around so much, and I have never had the urge to switch to it,  I like my candles, I just get sick of answering "No they are not soy" about a hundred times a show.  ANy one have that problem also?

Well she's wrong about it being soy, but a paraffin dip is good for the skin too. Wink

Sorry Casey I have no advice.  I work with paraffin and I don't really sell yet.  I know that soy is all the rage right now, and that I use paraffin may hurt sales to a certain extent, I just like working with it.  Plus candles are my way of expressing my artistic creativity.  Mainly because I love being artistic, but have no natural talent Wink.  Soy doesn't offer that to me, and if anyone would be interested in buying my candles it would probably be for the look. I don't ever make solid colored pillars.

To hopefully avoid the "Are these soy?" and all the negative comments people make when you say no, I intend to make a banner saying Paraffin Candles.  I know all to well that most people don't read, but it might help some.  Maybe? Roll Eyes  I do email advertising for my painting business, and in the email it says that we specailize in interior and exterior painting, drywall (both new and repair) etc.  I got an email back yesterday and all it said is "So you do drywall?"  Roll Eyes  I was wondering why I waste my time typing all the info if people aren't even going to read it.

That is a fantastic idea, I think I will steal that Grin.  I had a sign that stated what I see to be the "benefits" of using soy, (w/out disparaging parrafin of course), but a handout and a sign will be MUCH better!

Tall, I would not do that.  I don't think it is necessary, and if someone needs to ask you if they are soy, they will have to come up to your booth to do so, thus coming closer to your product, and increasing the possiblilty of a sale.  If you have a big banner that gives such info from far way, they'll just keep walking.  I had 8x11 price signs up, and have decided that it was a mistake.  Ppl would see it, and decide not to stop and look or smell.  Once they put their hands and noses on the candles, and talk to you about it a bit, then they're interested.

Right on Casey...

Anyway, back to a subject touched on earlier here about dipping hands in the melted wax and rubbing it in to the skin...

Just wanted to remind anyone that might have forgotten this is not a good practice to encourage; however, that being said, people will continue to do what they want - w/parafin or soy!  Anyway, be sure to tell people they need to be sure that any FO used in that wax is Skin Safe..!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to remind you.
