flame becoming smaller

What would cause the flame to sort of die out as the candle burns down? I'm testing 8 oz. square masons (diagonal 3") and 8 oz. straight sided jellies. I am using soy with 5/8 oz. FO per 8 oz. wax (weighed) and pale coloring. The square mason was wicked with an eco 10 and the jj with rrd 40. Both started out fine with good melt pool and pretty good throw, but about half way down, flame is faltering and just not making an adequate melt pool or clearing the edges anymore. What am I doing wrong? Your answers are the only thing keeping me making changes and testing candles! Thanks a bunch!!! SmileyBeth

The 3" square mason I would wick up to a ECO12 or ECO14. Soy has to be wicked up from paraffin.  Not sure about the jelly jar as I am not using RRD's in my container candles.

I was wondering what kind of soy are you using? I ask because I recently switched waxes and, the same wicks won't work in both types of soy. I didn't change jars just brands of waxes. I use a 16 oz ball canning jar and was able to use an eco 10 with a great melt pool and it would leave no wax hangup. Know the eco 10 doesn't work well at all in my new wax. and as far as the straight sided jelly I was using an eco 8 and loved the burn I got of that one to.  Heather

Hi Heather! I'm using GF plain 415 (all soy) wax from Snowtop. I am concerned with all the problems people have had with this wax, but it pours so nice, seems to have good hot and cold throw, and seems to be ok, just having trouble wicking with what others say works. Seems I need to go bigger. I have started to add a scant amount of universal soy additive to see if it can cure wet spots, but not enough to feel it effects the wicking. It also seems some companies fragrances work better than others. HTH. Beth

Back again. Thanks Kerry, I will try wicking up as I do like how the eco wicks burn. Beth

Hi! You do need to wick higher especially when you've added the modifier, it tends to make the wax harder. It also helps with wet spots if you pour high temp, as high as 85C (around 180 something F, sorry!)

not sure about the FO percentage you are using, but you can use 1/2oz for the 8oz of wax. Try a bigger RRD, use teh 47 or 50 and if that is still too weak then go up to the 55

Thanks again for all the help. I will try pouring one of each suggestion. I worry so about getting too big of a wick. Beth

What comes to mind for me is that the FO has settled toward the bottom of your candle.  What temperature did you heat your wax to, and what temp did you add your FO?  With the jelly jar, the RRD40 should work for most FO's, and use a 47 for the hard to wick ones.  I would be worried about using the 50 or 55.  Those are too big of wicks in that jar.

Just got back to this post. I added scant shave of color block at about 185-190 degrees and scent at 175. Stirred well then and some during cooling and then stirred well before pouring at slushy stage. Hope you see this Lovesoy...if not I might pm you. Thanks. Beth
