scent from soy

Hello all, I poured (soy wax container blend) 3 8oz containers the other day, I used 1lb of wax and 1 oz of fo. they smelled great when not burning but there wasn't any scent when they were burning. I'm sure I mixed everything correctly. Can someone give me any ideas where I messed up? Thanks, Barry

What brand of wax were you using? What kind of fragrance oil? At what temp did you add the fo?

I'm not sure what brand of wax it was, it was recommended by a local candle supply store in the city I live in. The scent was sex on the beach, and the pouring temp was between 150 and 160 I beleave, I'm not positive on the exact temp.

Did you burn them right away after they hardened up? Soy candles need to cure from 1 day to 1 month depending on the wax, container size, scent, etc. Try letting them sit a week and then burn.

In my limited experience I have found that the brand of FO is very important. My first soy candles were made with Fo's I had gotten off Ebay and they were OK but nothing to write home about. After doing a lot of reading here and on other forums I ordered a Peaks sample selection. I started testing with the Peaks samples and just this week got 5 16oz bottles. I LOVE the Peaks FO's. I get great throw hot and cold.

I would personally up your % to 1.5 ounce per pound.

There could be other reasons for not having a strong hot throw, If your melt pool wasn't deep (ex 2 1/2" diameter jj in 3hrs has a mp of 1/4" to 1/2".) MP of 3/4" is ideal (advise I was given when I started and follow when testing new FO's). The first burn for that diameter is approx 2/1/2-3 hrs, a little less for each burn after to get a good mp. If I don't get these numbers and the scent is weak I will wick up or reduce my FO (and high amounts of dye can effect the burn, I like working w/ pastels for that reason- some do not color their candles). The normal is 1.5oz FO to 1lb of soy wax but check on your package directions (hopefully it'll say.) Soy wax itself makes a difference. The FO you used could be diluted or not for soy. Also my soy distributor recommends adding FO at 175* so the wax and FO will bind. Is your head spinning yet Alot involoved, testing is definately essential. But candlemaking is lots of fun not to mention addicting. I started back in October of last year and my house will never look the same (neat) again HTH and this info is MO

Hi Barryjay. I just read all the posts to this. Lots of great advice. Sometimes we lose sight of all the variables (at least I have from time to time). I finally did a small thing that was a big help - I made a list. Suddenly my head stopped spinning. And my candles improved.

That's GREAT advise! One thing I do but forget to mention everytime and it really is IMPORTANT. If you take notes from begining to end you'll know what to do or not to do for the same candle (or any recipe thinking of B&B recipes). Don't forget to include burn results.
