100% soy pillars - is it possible?

I only do 6oz tins right now, but there are times I look around at paraffin pillars and really want to do them!  Does anyone do pillars with soy?  I really want to stay away from adding any paraffin at all.

YOu can do soy pillars but I think you need to add beewax and stearic to help make them more sturdy.

Fresh is right, you can add things to plain soy to make it firm enough to release from the mold and be a good soy pillar.  Because of the softness of soy you probably won't want to go over a 3 x 6 size pillar.  You can always buy a preblended soy wax, especially made for votives or pillars, that needs no other additives.  One thing to remember though, you are not going to get the same effects from the soy that you get from the paraffin.

Sure you can make pillars out of soy - you just can't get very creative with them like you can with paraffin and they won't burn the same (you can't hug them unless you add paraffin or BW to the soy pillar blend). These are some posts on soy pillars you may want to look at before you decide:

When I make them I use a soy specifically for votives and pillars, like ecosoya's.

Use the search engine to find other posts about soy pillars if you like.

I wanted to add (in case its not obvious from my pics) that I've never had one totally "consume" itself like a paraffin or BW candle, just like I've never had a palm pillar totally consume itself either. There is always at least an inch to 2 inch "wall" of some sort left.

I have made pillars using 50% soy (S1 Astorlite which is actually a container blend soy) and 50% paraffin.  Using a flat braided XL Yaley wick, it hugged all by itself and performed marvelously even under a 13 hour power burn.  However, S1 is discontinued.  You would probably do better with a soy pillar blend, making sure it is all vegetable, if your desire is all natural and no petroleum products.

I have tried to make 100% soy pillar.  Yes, you can make them but I don't like the way that they burn.  They tend to have alot of blow outs.  I am testing to see how bees wax helps but I am seriously thinking about buying a preblended wax for making pillars.   Undecided

I mixed 50/50 pillar soy with BW and IMHO I got the worst of both worlds. I had to wick way up again and I seemed to get more mushrooms with the blend than I got with EITHER of the waxes alone. I never experimented with different ratios - I'm sure that would have worked, but I'm not big on mixing anymore - I'm burning out from all the testing at the moment Smiley Not to mention the expense. I'm starting to lean more to the KISS principle at this point.

Regarding the wick pulling out:

1. make sure its cool - can still be rather soft inside the pillar and cool outside.

2. make sure mold is very clean (use heat gun or oven, don't wash) and use mold release.

3. place mold in fridge for 1/2 hour before unmolding

4. do what i do - use wick pins for your pillars - that way you can swap a couple wicks out if your choice of initial wick goes horribly wrong.
