Wick pin how to.

I've seen a lot of questions on the board about how to use wick pins. When i got my first ones, I was a bit lost, too. Even having the pins and molds in my hands, it took me a while to figure out just how to use the silly things.

It's pretty straight forward with votives. Not much worse with seamless molds, of the right size. But with the tin molds, where the pins don't fit inside... THAT took a bit of thinking and a phone call. Kicked myself really hard for making something so simple into a big deal.

The problem is, that it's hard to explain this simple little thing to anyone if they can't see it. So I took some pictures.

Now we've already  established that both my photography skills and camera are crap, so you might have to squint a bit.

First the votives. Drop dead simple. Just drop the pin in the cup and pour the wax.

That's how they work!
See what you mean about kicking oneself after seeing how it's done Shocked
I was thinking of so many complicated ways that the wick pins would work Roll Eyes

Now the pillars. Got one seamless, one tin. The wick pin next to the tin mold, on the right, has a circle of sealer around the base, the other doesn't.

Now from the bottom of the molds. The seamless has a dab of mold seal over wick hole, because the pin will drop in from the top, just like the votive cups.

The wick pin for the tin molds will go in from the bottom, while the seamless drops down inside. With another size mold, you could go in from the bottom with the seamless, as well.

With the tin mold, the mold seaeler spreads out and levels the pin out. The base of the pin should sink a little below the base of the mold. You can hold the mold by the base, wrap your fingers under and press the pin tightly against bottom of the mold. You can wriggle it back and forth to get it straight. The mold seal will keep it more stable than I'd thought, at first.

Here's a bit better pic of the base of the tin mold, with the wick pin in.

Here''s both molds upright. You can make out the pin, in the center of the seamless mold. Just like the votives the base is atcually inside the mold. The glare from the flash is obscuring the pin that's in the tin mold.

Hope this is of use to some folks... otherwise I'm burning a lot of server space for nothing. LOL

I've done it both ways with the mold in the picture. Putting it inside is just easier to me. The tops have a bit of a jagged edge, but I always go over the edges of all my candles with a stocking, anyway, so it's not a problem for me.

Thanks for the correction, though. I'm sure a lot of people would prefer your way, and I barely mentioned it. Smiley

Well since I had to get on the phone with you and muck about with them for about a week, before I figured the wick pins out properly... I figured there HAD to be a couple of people around here who were at least as dense as I am.

And I only wear the stocking on my hands... thak you very much.

It's good to have a visual - thanks DP!
I do the pin on the outside of the aluminum too. And I use a HUGE gob of sealer - that way you can really snug down the mold and get it level.

Same here. That and getting so frustrated trying to explain it to a couple of other people, is why I did this. It's almost impossible to visualize without seeing it... or it was to me. Smiley
