drifting wicks?

I use CD wicks for the majority, but also some LX series. I have had some occasional issues with wicks drifting after they've burned about halfway down.

Any way to correct this? Or do I need to go back to zinc core? Or are they just burning too hot and maybe I need to change the size?

Advice appreciated!!

When you pour the candles, are you making sure that the wicks are secured and that they are pulled *TAUT*? (By using a wick bar, etc)

I had this problem when I first started, and it was caused by not pulling the wicks taut when I poured them. HTH

When they are 1/2 way down, is it ALL liquid? And are you talking about a votive or jar?

This info would help narrow down what is happening. If it is a jar, you should secure your wicks and wick down. You should not have a jar candle burnt only 1/2 way down that is all liquid.

I'm using stickums, and yes, pulling taut. I use clothespins to hold them up.

These seem to be happening mostly in my mason jars only. No, the candle is not all liquid at that point by the time it burns halfway down... but I use pretty soft wax (Comfort Blend, and a soy/para blend that's 118MP). I use CD 14 with the mason jars.

Thanks again!

Do you have a picture you could post?

Just to clarify... the wick is evenly centered at the top and the tab underneath, but it's off in the middle? When you look inside it... does the wick look like it's still coming from the center and laying over or it's actually coming up through the wax off center?

Something I just thought of... these are LX and you're used to zinc? Could it be the curl making the burn off center?

What kind of candles are we talking about?

Added: Duh! Nevermind. You said you stick the tabs down, so it's containers...lol

When I think "drifting wick" I'm thinking it is floating to the side of the candle, and in order for that to happen it would have to be all liquid. But you say it is not... I'm confused too. A pic would help.

Would a leaning wick be what we are talking about here?  I have had wicks lean; not move, but lean allot towards one side of the jar  Huh If so, then sounds to me like the meltpool maybe too deep, so I would wick down to see if this clears up the problem.  Reaching here Undecided

I had this problem because I was using a tongue depresser for a wick hold. The wickes would absorb some of the wax upon being poured and sag to one side or the other in the middle. I switched to wick bars and the problem is gone!

I'm still trying to find a picture as I don't have any in-house right now that are doing this... but Fire and Ice I think you hit the nail on the head! I am threading the wick through the hole of the clothespin so I think it is bending in the middle after some of the wax melts off.

I'm also wondering if I pour too hot (190). Maybe if I stick the wicks in after the wax has cooled a bit, it won't happen.

I'll look around for those wick bars (maybe Peak's has them, or suggestions are appreciated) and experiment a little. The melt pool seems to be OK.

Thanks again everyone for trying to help me. Smiley
