I've been set up

Long..

I've been having problems at my job for about 8 months.  Yet I am the top performer as far as production/quality (I do over double of most employees).  Well, if someone goes to complain about me they write me up...they don't ask me if I did it or why I did it, I just get written up.  Well, they approached me to be a mentor to assist the trainers since they hired 14 people at once.  No problem, I am always willing to help.  They ended up bringing on 2 more mentors.  Well, when there is a problem the mentors get together and compare notes (teamwork, I thought).  Along with mentoring, I am like the "go-to" person for questions.  Well, I had "words" with a trainer last Thursday and she ran off to HR. HR called in people around me to question them about the situation, but to this day still have not called me back. Angry  I then called the VP of HR and expressed my concern about possibly getting written up again without being able to tell my side of the story and punished for something that I am not in the wrong for.  Well Tuesday when I get to work, my manager calls me in and says that I have been conversing with the other mentors and it creates a distraction amongst the department.  I then ask her if I have a question who do I go to?  She said to take it to the supervisor (who don't know squat).  Fine.  She says she doesn't want me talking to any of the employees because it creates a distraction.  Well, how am I supposed to effectively mentor if I cannot answer questions, etc?  No answer. But she calls in the other mentors and praises them and tells them to continue to go to each other for help. Then today, the HR manager is going around telling people that she can't believe I called the VP on her, that I create problems throughout the department and that the company will be alot better once I'm gone.  hmmmm.  Does this mean, they put me in the position to have people come to me with questions to give them leverage to say I am creating a problem in the company?  I called the VP back and left him a message that I was disgusted that my problem wasn't confidential and now it is involving other employees getting them all rialed up.

Not to brag..but I am the only person there that knows that job backwards and forwards and up and down.  But they are constantly trying to knock me down.

If they don't fire me tomorrow, like I think they will.  They have me tied in because the $$$$...UGGGHHHH!

Thanks for listening/reading  Wink

Any suggestions?   Huh

If they don't fire you, I would ask for a meeting between all involved or go to the VP and ask for an outline of your job responsibilities and that of a mentor. The meeting would help clear the air (I would hope.) The list of job responsibilities is a clear cut list of what you are to be doing and should eliminate the complaining.
It's got to be a huge headache for you. I'm hoping things get straightened out instead of them firing you. Just explain to them that you want to be the best team player you can be for them and would like an outline of dos and don'ts too. Or ask to be relieved from the mentor position since it seems to be creating conflicts and you have no way of being a good mentor with the restrictions placed on you.

Thanks Scented...I have already taken the actions you have requested.  I did in fact send an email after I heard what HR was going around telling people to be relieved from mentoring. They have yet to give me a clear cut answer of any expectations beside daily production.  I've got written up for excessive emails 2 times, yet they didn't outline what was excessive until a week after the second time and both times I asked for clarification in writing.  They are so assbackwards it is not funny.  And supposed to be a government subcontractor.  Wow!

Well how long ago did you ask to be relieved as a mentor? Sounds like they don't want to outline anything because they don't want to get into a position where you say that's not in my job description or they don't know what is needed to do your job.

I just sent the email today before I left. I agree they don't want to set policies because then they would held accountable for actions that are set in place.  They have a history of setting policy after someone is in trouble.  Today this girl got fired for eating at her desk.  We all do it, but rumor is by Monday it is going to be a policy that we can't eat at our desk.  Backwards!  hahaha

Is there a union here?   Shocked
If there is, file a grievance ASAP. If not, cross your t's and dot your i's. Keep documentation of everything and don't tell any of your co-workers your business. It sounds like there is some serious madness going on at your job.

I am hearing these things with my husband.I think I mentioned it on another post.Well I think they want those that have been there longer and those who are older to go.I know that is the case with a couple of my husband's co-workers.They fired one (older man) and the other they have been treating horribly. So when the one man got fired the other took sick leave.he only has 6 months till he is 65 and they hope he would have quit.Things are getting bad that way.So I am sure this guy will be off for almost the 6 months and I don't blame him.As for my husband he had 18 months before retirement. He said he will be next.

You may not be older but have alot of knowledge and also probably get paid a little more from what the new hires get. They can train and pay less all the while you are getting them ready to take on things.I think that is bad no rules about eating at desk but now is and a worker gets fired before the fact.Things like that were going on at where my husband's work and guess what a couple got their jobs back.

Keep us informed. It amazes me they don't care about those with knowledge. My husband is over qualified but when he leavesplace is hurting. The bosses have even told him, kinda keeps things going and don't let others get the shaft. He was going to go to bat for the guy who ended up on sick leave but looks like he was a step ahead of the company. Now I am not talking about a small company I am talking about a large company with plants all over.

I agree with if there is a union, get with a steward.  If not, maybe a lawyer could help.  This is how the federal government operates on a daily basis!  Its a shame that places can treat employees like that and get away with it.

I have 1 question to ask.....  Are you a government employee or are you an employee of a private contractor?  My hubby is a city government employee.  Alot of people think "he has his cake and can eat it too"  If only it were that nice.  His hours were just upped to 50/week with no additional pay.  (Within 3 more years it will 56hrs/wk)  He has worked there for 17 years and because the city has mismanaged the pension fund, they have now said all spousal benefits are void.  These were vested benefits.  In the private sector this is illegal.  In the public sector, its all fair game.  The sad part is he is not a desk worker, he is a city firefighter.  He is putting his life on the line for the same city that is not just trying, but succeeding in screwing the FD.  Anyway, he is unionized, but that doesn't mean diddly for government employees.  With all this said, I really hope you work in the private sector because YOU HAVE RIGHTS!!  As a government employee you have squat.  I hope it works out for you.  Don't give up without a fight!!

i think i would document what has been done regarding the mentoring thing (they asked you b/c you had good knowledge, you answered questions, got reprimanded for it while others were encouraged to keep doing it, etc) and then resign your position as a mentor for those reasons.

it sucks they are so crazy there, but sometimes there isn't much you can do.  parts of the administration in my job are crazy too, but it's the upper level people, so there is nothing that can really be done.  they do what they want and everyone else has to deal with it.

good luck and i'll keep my fingers crossed nothing bad happens!

I applaud you for standing up for yourself.  My hubby went thru some heavy stuff at work and he hates confrontation.  He just sat there and took what was dished out with out standing up for himself.  Then when he was so frustrated he would freakout on them and they would look at him like he was an alien.  You need to keep on top of it every step of the way. I think you were right to step out of the mentoring program. My hubbys work constantly wanted him to mentor others, but he is not good at that type of thing. So rather than leave him alone about it, they hounded him and then reprimanded him when he did not mentor appropriately.

Well, I made it through another 8 hours.  Undecided  They are sweating right now, cause I have been extra quiet.  Every time I'd pass my manager or sup they give me a crazy look like they are trying to figure out what I'm up to.  I seen some folks consoling (sp?) the HR manager today....maybe the VP said something to her.  He is supposed to call me back beginning of next week to let me know of his findings.

I never received a response to me stepping down from mentoring, so after 2 hours of me checking the new peoples work, I turned everything in and ask for some of the day to day production work.  Sup turned beat red.  Well!Huh!

I thought at 5 they would say they needed to speak with me (to fire me), but they didn't.  We'll see what monday brings.

Thanks for the words.  And I have documentation up the ying yang...Emails from the HR manager that were totally unprofessional. I'm covered in that area.

Problems that have gone on for 8 months aren't likely to go away any time soon, I would think.  I feel for you in having to endure what must surely be pure agony each day you go to work.

When the boss puts the word out not to talk to other people it's usually because they've been trashing you to the other workerbees.  If you're working as a government contracter it doesn't take anything to get rid of you. If the boss thinks for an instant that the government agency is unhappy in any way, they can make kneejerk reactions, (which can include unwarranted termination of good workers who may have personality clashes with government employees) to try and appease the agency.  The bottom line is, that even if you are the best at your job, if you lack people skills (I don't mean you personally)or aren't a suck up, it's easy to make you the scapegoat for all problems.

It sounds like a lousy place to work anyway, with all the write ups, it sounds like a very dictatorial place that has little respect for its employees as people or professionals.

I really hope things can be happily resolved for you. My advice is to seriously look at your situation and try to see things from all perspectives--your boss, HR, and your peers.  What created the problem in the first place? Is there anything you can do differently?  Is it worth the grief that you're putting up with everyday?

I worked at a place I hated. After 2 years of personality conflicts, I decided my self respect was worth more than a paycheck and I got the hell out of that place. I quit my job in a spur of the moment decision, with nothing else lined up. After one month of being unemployed, I got a job making 25% more than I was making at the job I hated, and the new place treated me as a professional.  Life can be good.  But how good it can be is up to you.  Don't put up with crap.  If you're miserable it's because you know you deserve better.  Demand it.  Go out and get it!

I think the HR manager breached a confidentiality clause if she was complaining to other people that you called the vice president in charge of human resources about her conduct. Can you prove the HR manager did this? If she mentioned that you were the one who called, that is a breach and a huge no-no.

Donna:
I can't prove she did it...Well, I can, but don't want other peoples jobs to be on the line.  Nobody knew I called the VP.  But they know now, with that I have learned that another person had called the VP about a week prior to me and nothing was done.  Now, I hearing rumors about an investigation of HR.  That could be good or bad.  I know that I didn't want the entire company involved in this at all.  Now, for all I know they may try to blame the leak on me.  This is how they operate.  Yes, I'm the scapegoat in just about every situation.  Sad.

soapmafia:
I know what you mean about personality conflicts.  But they try to make it seem it is with my peers. But it isn't.  People stop at my desk all day for questions, small talk, advice/problems, etc.  If my co-workers thought so badly of me, why do they continue to come to me for various reasons?  Part of me think it is jealousy.  Which we are all grown azz women.  Example, I had on a pair of shoes and the HR lady caught me off guard and asked me where I got them (I normally don't give up trade secrets  Wink ), I told her....the next day who is sporting those shoes at work?  Why?  Another occasion, a department store started a big sale on shoes, I went out on lunch with a friend and purchased 14 pairs of shoes (yes, I have a sickness) and when we came back, I didn't put them in my car it was parked farther away.  So I took them up and people naturally started talking and someone heard me say 14 pair...Well, HR found out.  The very next morning she is skipping up and down the isles saying she purchased 16 pair.  Biggie wow wow!  Their comments are that I never wear anything twice.  Which I do, but even if I didn't,  that is my perogative.  Hahaha, this has me thinking.  When I started I was driving an Acura RL...The HR had an Taurus, traded it in for a Buick something (bigger car).  Then about 2 months later I got a Durango (ick!), she showed up with a Ford Escape.  Then 2 months after the Durango, we purchased a Suburban...She then got a Ford Explorer.  Well, a year and a half later I just got a Trailblazer (cause the durango~ick)...she drives up in a F150.  But she makes the big bucks!  Why try to keep up with me, she'll be just as broke as I am...hahaha.

So from that, you can kind of see where the problem actually lies.  And it just filters down thru management.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thoughts.  Hubby is in my tail about getting my candles up and going so I can prepare to quit or if I get terminated.  But I only have the wicking down for the tins and don't think that is enough to offer.  So I'll be pouring more testers this weekend.
