Brain Teaser
« on: Jul 10th, 2005, 4:03pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Three men encounter bad weather on a fishing trip and head for the nearest hotel.  The deskclerk charges them $30.00 for a room, so they each hand him a $10.00 bill and go to the room.

Later, the deskclerk realizes he made a mistake--the room charge is only $25.00.  So he tells the bellhop what happened, gives the boy 5 dollars, and asks him to give it to the fishermen. But on the way up to the room, the bellhop realizes the 3 men can't easily split 5 dollars, so he gives them 3 dollars,  and keeps two for himself.

So now the men have each paid $9.00 for the room.  Three times nine equals $27.00.  The bellhop kept $2.00.  That brings the total to $29.00.

What happened to the other dollar? Huh

There is no "other dollar."  Everything else in the equation is true but this part.  The bellhop had $5.  Kept $2, leaving $3.  Gave the $3 to the men.  End of story.  The above total of $29 is coincedentally close to the original $30 so it throws off the thought process.

I really think mizbizzyb took it   Grin

Actualy 9 time 3 equal 27 IS true, but has nothing to do with the total amount of money.
they paid 30 for the room
the bellhop kept 2 which means they paid 28 for the room
they each got a dollar back which means they paid 25 for the room...which they did  (and then lied about the fish they caught!)  Grin

That is one of my favorite brain teasers.  Heard that when I was a lot younger.  Still tell it to some people and they still have to think about it. Smiley

Here we go.......  While we would first think that it is (9 x 3)+2 = 29$, which is $1 less than the initial charge of the room, the true calculation is (9x3)-2, which gives you $25.  Wink

The room costs $25, and if we add the $2 kept by the bellboy, the total amount the three guests paid is $27.

It's just a very good play on words.  If they pay 30, then 5 is sent back up with the bellboy (leaving 25 at the desk), he pockets 2 and gives all 3 of them each a dollar back, that is the $30.00.
