Fantastic thick creme

I love this, it's not greasy but it stays on and it's fantastic on hands, feet, elbows and knees.  It's a tweak of a recipe I found on another board, but different enough to be a new creation.

All measurements by weight

2.4 oz soybean oil
1 oz E-wax
.5 oz stearic
1 oz soy wax (I used Joy)
1 oz cocoa butter
1 oz mango butter
12 oz distilled water

Preservative at 1%
FO as desired

Put everything but water, preservative and FO in a bowl, microwave at 1 minute intervals until melted.  Heat water in a larger bowl 3 minutes.  Pour melted oils into water and blend with stick blender.  Blend every five or 10 minutes briefly until it cools to the temp you need to add your preservative and FO if using.  Pour into malibus or jars, let cool.  It will be nice and thick.

It's a very thick lotion type.  It works in a malibu tube, but it would also work in a jar.  It's not thin like lotions are usually, but not as thick as a body butter or salve.

What type of preservatives is used?  Are there alot of different kinds?  Does each one affect the product differently?  Completely new to all this, but you all are definately peaking my interest!  Really need to get my room finished so I can go soap and candle crazy Wink

Germaben II-E or Germall Plus for formulas with high water percentages, Phenonip or Liquipar Optima for all-oil formulations.  Technically, an all-oil formulation will not grow beasties because they need water, but in the real world wet fingers will probably be in the formula at some point and there's your problem.  I would put preservatives in all formulations.  There are other preservatives out there but these four are the easiest to find.

Extracts (grapefruit seed, rosemary, vitamin E etc) are NOT preservatives, although some people will tell you they are.  Vitamin E is an antioxidant, but won't prevent mold.
