Expensive Luxury Oil Cream
« on: Mar 2nd, 2005, 10:33am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I had completely "reworked" a recipe that was done by Tammy Price at Homespun Soap and Sundries (Thanks for the great base recipe Tammy!)

Here's what I whipped up this morning. I don't think that I will making this on a large scale as of yet (pricing on alot of these oils are very expensive) But, I made three 4 oz. jars for myself and hubby. It's VERY rich and incredibly sinful. Let me know if you make a batch.

Exotic Oil Cream Test: Mar.02/2005

This recipe makes approx. 12 oz of thick cream.
Follow basic lotion making directions.
This makes a very thick cream if you follow these amts.
I filled 3-4 oz. jars.

Phase I (water)

155 g hydrosol or distilled water
10 g aloe vera liquid (original recipe called for aloe vera gel)

Phase II (oil) NOTE: I changed the first 6 oils-the original recipe was avocado oil/olive oil/and cocoabutter.
The reason I did this was: I had a ton of small oil samples that had arrived last week and wanted to work on new formulations
with them.

25g rice bran oil
12 g emu oil
2 g Apricot Kernel Oil
2 g Borage Oil
2 g Evening Primrose oil
2 g Camelina Oil
15 g mango butter
4 g wheat germ oil
4 g jojoba oil
15 g stearic acid
15 g e wax

Phase III:

1 g liquipar optima (or preservative of choice according to mfg instructions)
1 g liquid silk
1 Tablespooons dry flo (the original recipe called for 2 tbsp. but I didn't want it that "dry")

OPTIONAL: add 1 teaspoon of EO of choice. I added a 1/2 tsp of mandarin eo and a 1/2 tsp of oakmoss
The scent is lovely and earthy  Kiss

*totally tweaked recipe by Luv4Country Soaps

Camelina Oil - “Gold of Pleasure“

(Camelina Sativa Seed Oil)
Camelina Oil, also known as “Gold of Pleasure“ is a unique vegetable oil with a high Omega-3 content suitable for a variety of skin care and nutraceutical applications (soft gels). Camelina oil exhibits good emollient properties, and is rich in ALA (Alpha Linoleic Acid, 18:3 n-3); an Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) typically found in fish oils, which is responsible for good cellular health. May be used in creams, lotions, balms, and lipsticks, bar soaps or any anhydrous formulation where the skin nutritive properties of Camelina Oil are desired.
Suggested Use Levels: Lotions & Creams 1-5% | Balms: 2-7% | Bar Soaps: 2-7% | Nutraceuticals: up to 100%

Can anybody suggest an alternative to Camelina Oil ? I have almost all of the other things needed to make the cream. I also need to know whether I could use Germaben II instead of Liquipar optima?
Thank you,
padma.

I'd say just do 4 oz. of the Borage instead of 2, if you can't add the camelina. Sometimes a recipe is good because of all the ingredients combined. Wink But, if I had to sub out the camelina, then I would tend to pick the next best oil in quality.
If Germaben II is good for creams then yes..you are fine..I only use Liquipar and Phenonip as my preservatives.

Kimberly:

It's kinda hard for me to suggest a recipe change with a different batch of oils, as the properties of the final cream would be completely different than the original. What I might suggest is experiment with what you have. It's like cooking, you need to follow the recipe pretty closely if you want the final item to be just right.  Grin

Kimberly,
You've got lots of great oils with similar properties to the ones in the recipe~!

Kimberly (love your name btw   Grin )  I understand the emu cost, but I really think it's a great oil.  I've only used it in one lotion, one that I use for my son's eczema and my stretch marks on my belly, and have noticed a difference.  When Ethan's eczema breaks out, one to two treatments of this lotion works wonders (course, there are some other really great oils in there too, but me thinks the emu might live to to at least *some* of the hype)  You may consider playing with it on a *luxury* lotion or something.  It will definately be in my arsenal.

Oh, I agree!  I don't ever want to be out of emu oil.  It's a key ingredient in several of my recipes.

You are the first that I know of to try this recipe sewhite! Grin Glad to hear that you like it. Did you use "all" the same oils? and the aloe vera juice?
If not, I'd love to hear your tweak.  Cheesy

For the first batch I followed your recipe to the T ( by the way it was a pita just measuring out 2 grams of oil Grin) and yeah I want to continue to try some more small batches using different oils. I have some olive squalene (sp?) and a few others I want to try for a face only cream since it's so nice and thick and already has some yummy oils in it and then probably I'll use some standard (not quite as costly) oils for the body lotion. Also I was thinking about thinning it down just a tad so I could put it in malabu tubes or something for the body lotion.
It's so ironic that I just happened to have all the oils called for in this recipe. Usually I see a great one and don't have everything I need. Thanks for posting it.

You're a doll for posting your results. I appreciate that sewhite. Tell me about the measurements! LOL, my scale isn't the best either for "tiny" increments. But, overall, I have a good eye.
