Soap molds, fancy or square??

Ok, here's what I want to know. I have some absolutely gorgeous soap molds that I use for my M&P goat's mik & glycerin soaps. I always use some shimmer block in my goats milk for a subtle shimmer effect. I think they're beautiful and I have been selling them. But, when I check out other etailers soaps, they are almost always straight blocks, like cut from batches. Is this what customers want more than fancy soaps? Any of you that sell soap, what have you found to be a bigger seller? TIA

i *think* that a lot of the people who make cp soaps use slab molds because it enables them to do larger batches.

personally, i like the look of both. i really like the homemade look that you get from the handcut bars. but i also have seen some really cool soap molds.

I make CP, using simple individual molds.  Using a large mold, and then cutting into bars, is more common.  Me, I can't cut the bars at all, and I like the uniformity of individual molds.  It is harder to do individual molds, and you have to work very fast.  I do small batches, only about 2 lb of oils, and I've had to really hurry to get it into the molds quick enough.  It's not forgiving, you can't just melt it a little more like you can M & P.

I do CP, and use a log mold, where it's easy to slice out 16 bars from the log. And slab molds, where the soap you see is one of the wide sides, is easier to do swirls in. CP is a bit harder in fancy patterned molds because 1 - since they're so small you might get discoloration if it doesn't go into gel, they're harder to insulate, and 2 - you're doing so few at once, it's very time consuming. You'd have to have a lot of molds to do 16 bars at a time.

Ok, I'm getting it now. So most of the block styles are CP and probably not M&P? I make all my products fresh to order so I can't wait for CP to cure. Also, since I have 40+ scents to choose from, there is no way I can have bars in each scent just sitting around. I do like the block style though.

You might be safe to say "most", but I've seen M&P done in logs too, where you cut off slices. But I think a lot of M&Pers like the different molded shapes. If you see something very translucent it's a sure bet it's some kind of M&P or someone went to a lot of trouble to create their own clear soap.

I've never done M&P so I don't know how it hardens/cures up if there was more mass to it. You could test it by pouring into something rectangular, like a drawer organizer with straight sides, or a small lined box, and see what happens.
