Does anyone here make there own lotions/bath gels/salts etc? Thinking of making those for my shop as well as candles.

I've been debating adding some body stuff (other than the simple M&P soaps that I do). My next step, though, will be to offer some bath salts.
The hard part, for me starting out, is labeling. 'Cause w/the bath and body products, you have to label the ingrediants and everything.

bath salts can be very very simple. ive seen a lot of recipes, the one i do is this: 1/2 epsom salts, 1/2 chunky sea salts (i prefer the chunky look, and i use dead sea salts) then i add in some essential oil (or FO) and i use some soap dyes that i picked up a joannes. originally i was told to use food coloring, but the color just runs right out of the salts, looks gross sitting on the bottoms of the containers, so i tried this and it works great. it *does* eventually start to settle to the bottom, but that's after like months, and hopefully they are all used up by then.
you mix them up real good, put them in a sealed container, and every day for a week you shake them up. then put them into whatever container you have chosen for packaging.. myself i like the bath salts tubes, the clear ones, they have a bunch on www.stuffjulielikes.com. and that's it. very simple, simple ingredients and everything  they also look really good in the envelopes ive seen a lot of places. but with the tubes, i like to do a couple different kinds that go together and layer them, looks real cool.
my next project is homemade soaps. ive seen a few of you already make them and they look great!  so i know who i will be coming to for pointers, hehe. i have the stuff, just waiting for the chance.

I make bath salts, cp soap, lotion, shower gel and bubble bath. I use smaller salt, though. I love the look of big crystals, but they don't melt as well in the bath, and you might find yourself sitting on lumpy chunks.
My lotions and other bath products are made from liquid bases, I just add scent and color, and put in my bottles. Actually, that makes labeling easier, since the bases come with the ingredients listed, in the right language to put on the labels.
I can suggest places to get bases, depending where you live.

I also just use a lotion base and scent it. But, I'm rethinking this and might discontinue it. I'd love to make my own, I'm trying to dup the feel of this base cuz it's a nice thick one. But I'm just too paranoid about the little beasties that could be growing in there. It would take me quite a while to get my formula down, get it tested for stability, then get it sent out for an anerobic plate count. I'm also feeling that I should get the APC done even on the bases, since I'm modifying them, which can incorporate bad things.
So I think I'm just going to do things without water, since they're much easier to preserve. Much safer. I already do whipped shea butter, might do bath salts, and I'm working on a sugar scrub that's kind of nice.

Depending on which base you use, they do come with a preservative, and they expect that you will add color and scent.
If you want to private message me, we can talk about what bases we use. I have a recommendation for you if you're interested, and I love to hear where you get yours.

Just because it has a preservative in it doesn't mean it's necessarily safe. You can still compromise the base when you add things, and you have no way of knowing if the preservative is still effective, because you can't get the test results from the manufacturer. I use Bittercreeks base and love it. I know it has preservative in it, and I always add less scent than they recommend, but I still don't *know* that it's safe. It has a good possibilty of being safe. This is just the paranoid me talking. Many people do this without extra testing, but it worries me. How do you know you're not getting a stray dog or cat hair? How do you know someone hasn't sneezed in it? Guess it's true with any bath&body item that's made in the home.

You make good points about preservative and sneezes, but, I thonk, you have to get to a point of not worrying about it. Hey, I still eat hot dogs!

There are several sites that have the bases made for you is that all you do is add color and dye and bottle it ?? I would love to do that. It would also be cheaper for me and I could customize based on what my customers want. I also saw the salts made..do you just add the scent

Yeah Andrea, that's why I still sell it But I hang around a lot of from scratch lotion makers, and they're very very concerned about contamination, and so just shake their heads when they hear about buying bases and scenting them. Might be a little bit of the 'scratch' snobbery, but they do have a point.
So I do the hot dog thing and hope that it was made in an approved facility and hasn't been contaminated by rebottling at the suppliers. If I ever make my own, where everything is under my control, I *will* have it tested for sure!

Do you get a lot of your supplies from Pourette? I do, they're great. I can suggest other ones, too, if you're interested.

OK I get wax and most candle supplies at Pourette. They are in Ballard (a neighborhood of Seattle) and have a walk-in store as well as wholesale. If you have a business license, you get 40% off most items. Sometimes that saves enough money for the license right there. With wholesale, you have to call and order a day ahead, but I just tell 'em I'm going to pick it up, and I don't pay shipping! For wax, I can't even imagine how much money I've saved. Oh, they have IGI wax.
Zenith Supllies on Roosevelt, in Seattle, has a great selection of oils for soap and lotion making. They have a website, but I just walk in. They have great oils, both fixed oils and scents. They have fragrance oils and a great selection of essential oils.
If you haven't tried Majesctic Mountain Sage www.thesage.com , take a look. They are in Utah, but they ship pretty quickly. They also have great information on their website.
Swan's Candles is in Tacoma. I bought wax and scent there, and their prices were reasonable. I only went there once, though, as they had BP Global wax and I don't like it as much as my 1343. The folks there were very nice, it's a nice but small shop next to their home. They had a great selection of molds, too.

You can also get info from the Soap Dish forum, which is more extensive than this one.

Thanks all! I am still researching it but I think I just might start this around the 1st of the year. I would like to make as many things as I can for my shop (except the food or course) It will set me apart from the other gift shops in the area. We have been doing candles and love it! I will probably get my supplies from King House Candle Supply because they are in my state and close so the shipping won't kill me..Unless you all have suggestions?
