Soap is soft

I have made several batches of soap now and they always seem to be just a tad bit soft. What am I doing that is causing them to be soft even after lot's of drying time. They work just fine, great lather and everything but just soft. tia

Sounds like you are using to soft of an oil and not creating a hard bar. Does it diminish pretty quicky also when you use it? I use palm oil in my bar for that reason. It helps with the hardness. If you want to post the recipe... that will help us look at it and determine what soft oils you should decrease.

This has been my main recipe and I have made a 2lb and 1lb with it: 2lb castor oil 1.75 cocoa butter 2.5 coconut oil 4 olive oil 14.5 palm kernel oil 4.75 palm oil 4.5 I used 4.6 on the lye with 12 ounces water. I use the 1% value for the lye, I talked to Judy at To Die for Soaps and she said since we live in Austin which is humid it is better to use 0% or 1% for the lye.

That is interesting. Your recipe looks good to me regarding a balance of softer and harder oils used. We have no humidity here so someone that deals with that would know better than I. Your recipe, where I live, would make a nice hard bar. I hope that the lye suggestion works for you.

Looks like a nicely balanced bar to me. I think you'd see a lot of difference if you backed the water down to 10 oz With the amount of lye you are using to that water, the ratio of lye to water is about 2.6:1, or a 27% solution. (I just calculated it that way to find the strength of your lye solution, gives me a ballpark on how much room you've got to move your water down.) You could safely reduce your water and not have too many problems.

I wondered if I could reduce the water and be okay but wasn't sure how much. I have done the lye test and there is no zapping on my tongue so I'm sure my soap is not lye heavy either. I am in the newbie soap swap so hopefully others can give me some feedback on my soap and I can see other peeps soaps. Thanks MM and Robin.

Hey, Texas! The soaps that you sent in for the swap are the same softness as everyone elses. I haven't opened up the package yet to see what you used for a recipe but I thought that I would mention that to you. Just in case you are coming down on your self to hard...
