okay - here are my dumb newbie questions for the day. I want to try my hand at soap over the weekend and am running out on my lunch hour to pick up what I need... here's my question.... is the Olive Oil & Canola Oil the same kind you can cook with.. and is the Castor Oil the stuff you give people to make them throw up.....?

yep they're the same kinds you cook with, though for olive buy the cheap stuff (pomace) you dont need extra virgin or anything. as for castor, i thought it was used to make people poo? but probably the same stuff!

Try buying Coconut oil from Walmart, it is a decent sized container for about $3.00.

Do you have a recipe in mind? You could do something like Very simple and basic 25% coconut oil 75% olive oil. This way you won't have a lot of extra ingrediants around that you won't be using!

Here's the one I'm going to try - if I get the nerve over the weekend 10oz of olive oil 7oz of coconut oil 1 tbl castor oil 6 oz distilled water 2.6 oz lye

That's a very small batch to start out with. You can use the same recipe, but i'd up it to 2 lbs. You can figure that out with http://soapcalc.com/calc/SoapCalc.asp the average lye discount is 5% and that's what the calc automatically takes. Good luck!

OK so I have been playing with cp alot last week and I took that recipie and dbled it.. really didn't know how much it would make until I read Robins response yesterday .. but now I know and this one is easier for beginners. IMHO with this recipie(sp) 20oz Olive oil 14oz Coconut oil 2tbls of Caster Oil 12oz distilled water 5oz of Lye I also took 1/4 tsp of ground cinnamon and mixed it with the caster oil and put some soap base with it..then poured in all in at trace and made swirlings...Please read Robins tutorial on cp soap making it helped me out alot... Not an expert and I hope someone will correct me if i'm wrong about anything ....thank Heavens no skin irritations and its not lye heavy.. IT Does taste like soap Yucky>>>lol..
